Ms. Prunoske's Introduction to Agriculture Class Experiments With Pickling
The Introduction to Agriculture Class investigated the pests of agriculture. We looked at invasive species and how we can control them to preserve crops. Then we looked at beneficial insects; specifically bees. Mr. Meyer brought in a full honeycomb to show the kids, and we talked about how bees naturally preserve their honey in the hive using beeswax.
We then looked at some research that illustrated the bacterial inhibition properties of honey and talked about how we can use it to better learn to preserve food and decrease food waste. So the question posed was, how can we preserve fresh produce?
So we tried our hand at pickling - and boy was that fun! We pickled cucumbers, bell peppers, green beans, carrots, zucchini, jalapenos, and even some spiced pickled apples! Students learned proper food handling techniques and the process behind the vinegar and the pickling. Super fun things marinating in the classroom
