In Intro to Agriculture, we focus much of the year on "Big Ag". We look at commercial farming and large quantities of food products and the impacts it has on the "sustainability barrel" (economy, environment, social effects) . This most recent project was focused on "Small Ag". They had an urban design challenge where each group was given a budget to create a community garden. Before they started their design, there was much to learn about gardening and maintenance of a community space. We watched some videos on community spaces and how they are funded, allocated and maintained. They learned about plant spacing, plant companions (what to plant next to each other), and how to prioritize the space to best suit the people using it. They were given a budget and provided scale drawings to their supervisor (me) for review and approval. From there, they built their 3D models. I am very proud of the work they did, and even more proud of their ambition to make it a reality. I hope they go further to talk to community leaders about a community garden project!
