Introduction to Agriculture Class builds terrariums

Intro to Agriculture sounds to most people I talk to, like a class about farming; but it is much more than that. During class, we look at the living and nonliving components of the planet and how they interact to essentially feed the world. After many students inquired about how they worked, I decided to look into making terrariums in class (I had one that they all were curious about on my desk last year). We talked about the different nutrient cycles that make our agriculture industry flourish, and they wondered if it was the same for smaller ecosystems that have little or no interaction with us. We researched what goes into creating a successful terrarium (soil, stone, filtration, nutrients) and the living things that go into them. We also discussed what we as non-agriculture industry citizens could do to help the environment - which is why we are using plastic containers that were recycled from home. What a way to reduce, reuse and recycle! Today is the day it all came together!
