Agriculture in the Classroom
The intro to Agriculture class at the high school has been working on a way to bring Agriculture to other students in the district for our "farm to school" initiative. They compiled 6 different topics that interested them and, well, it "grew" from there. While working on continuing their own curriculum, they spent any extra class time they had researching, designing, and creating a hands-on station activity for second grade.
We reached out to Ms. Bancroft in the primary school to see if this would be something her class would be interested in, and they were super excited to see what the Ag students had planned! Well, our test run was a success! The upperclassmen ran the stations, walking the littles through the importance of farming, plants, the microscopic world, and even worms! The littles asked questions, gave tons of facts from their own experiences, and were engaged in all the wonders of science that surrounded them.
Each student had a packet with some activities, fun facts, and even a DIY guide to hydroponics that is simple enough to make at home with recycled materials! Once they were done with their station, their "passport" was stamped with a special sticker, and they moved on to the next. Overall, both groups of students had a wonderful time teaching AND learning about the importance of agriculture in our lives. We hope to continue to collaborate across the buildings to increase the Farm to School community here at DCS!
