New York State Education Department Seals and Endorsements

Recognize Student Achievement Beyond the Diploma

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) offers several seals and endorsements that can be affixed to a student's diploma, recognizing mastery in specific academic or vocational areas beyond the standard graduation requirements. These recognitions serve to highlight a student's specialized skills, commitment, and achievements, providing valuable credentials for college applications and career pursuits. Eligible students can earn endorsements and seals in addition to their diploma.

Available Seals and Endorsements

The following table details the currently available seals and endorsements, including a brief description of the achievement they represent.

Honors

Academic Performance

The honors endorsement may be awarded to students who complete the requirements for either the Regents diploma or the Regents diploma with advanced designation. To earn the honors endorsement, a student must meet the assessment requirements for the Regents diploma or the Regents with advanced designation and also earn a computed average of 90 or above on the Regents Exams applicable to their diploma type (no rounding up is permitted).

Mastery in Mathematics 

Academic Performance

Student completed all the requirements for the Regents diploma with advanced designation; and

  • passed 3 Regents Exams in mathematics with a score of 85 or higher; or
  • passed 2 Regents Exams in mathematics with a score of 85 or higher and was granted an exemption on a third Regents Exam in mathematics; or
  • passed 1 Regents Exams in mathematics with an 85 or higher and earned a final course grade of 85 or higher in 2 additional mathematics courses culminating in a Regents Exam for which an exemption was granted.

Mastery in Science

Academic Performance

Student completed all the requirements for the Regents diploma with advanced designation; and

  • passed 3 Regents Exams in science with a score of 85 or higher; or
  • passed 2 Regents Exams in science with a score of 85 or higher and was granted an exemption on a third Regents Exam in science; or
  • passed 1 Regents Exam in science with an 85 or higher and earned a final course grade of 85 or higher in 2 additional science courses culminating in a Regents Exam for which an exemption was granted.

Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB)

Language Proficiency

Recognizes students who have attained a high level of proficiency in two or more languages, one of which must be English.

Seal of Civic Readiness

Civics and Citizenship

The Seal of Civic Readiness is a formal recognition that a student has attained a high level of proficiency in terms of civic knowledge, civic skills, civic mindset, and civic experiences.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) Endorsement

Career Readiness

The technical endorsement may be awarded to students who complete the requirements for any diploma type (local, Regents, or Regents with advanced designation) and also complete a NYSED-Approved Secondary Career and Technical Education (CTE) program that includes:  

  • passing a minimum of 3.5 CTE credits 
  • passing each part of a 3-part technical assessment (written, demonstration, project components).

Small Business Enterprise

Students who earn the Small Business Enterprise seal have studied the various aspects of entrepreneurship and business management. Their studies encompass the creation and operation of a business, human resources management, financial recordkeeping, and understanding the legal frameworks that govern businesses. This seal helps prepare students for a range of career fields, including but not limited to:

Students who earn the Restaurant Management seal have progressed beyond the Small Business Enterprise seal and gained extensive experience in the culinary field. They have honed their skills in all areas of food preparation and service, and have earned their ServSafe certification through the Livingston County Health Department. Additionally, students have engaged in menu creation, pricing strategies for various menu items, and explored the financial aspects involved in managing and owning bakeries, restaurants, and other food establishments.
